C/O HENLEY SALES AND CHARTER

CB reader Yves Gaignet has found himself in what he describes as “the not uncommon situation of an ageing couple:
wooden boat, and owner without the means or stamina to consider the thorough restoration the boat deserves”. He’s
had Savage, the first Rhodes 27, since 1993, keeping her in “cruising” rather than concours condition over the years.
Now it’s time for a new owner or partner. She’s the first of six identical Rhodes-designed 27s built by the famed
American Nevins yard (1939). This makes her a rare yacht from a pedigree designer and builder, and much of her
remains original. She’s 39ft (11.9m) long, displaces 7.6 tonnes and requires new caulking, a fastenings survey, engine,
and quite a bit more. A full set of drawings is available, as well as period photos from Rosenfeld and Levick. She
appears in Rousmaniere’s book Sailing at Fishers: a history of the Fishers Island YC (her original owner was commodore
of the club) and in Henderson’s book Philip Rhodes and his Yacht Designs (chapter Rhodes 27: a class with class).

LADY FLORENCE

Saloon launch

This 1926 Taylor and Bates gentleman’s saloon launch used to
belong to Thames broker Gillian Nahum. She was restored in the late
1980s by a team that included Trevor Green. Almost everything
below the water line was replaced. She also has a new hydraulic
steering system. Gillian sold her to her current owner in 2005, who
has kept her in concours condition, in a boathouse and looked after
by Henwood and Dean. Her mahogany hull planking has been kept
bright and quite stunning – in fact she’s a star turn at the annual
Henley Trad. She runs on a Fischer Panda hybrid system, and has a
heads and small galley area. For entertaining in style on the river,
this would be hard to beat. She measures 39ft 6in (12m) in length.

T/T CACOUNA

Clinker open launch
Bags of character, is how broker Gillian Nahum describes this
charming open clinker launch and it’s hard to disagree. She was the
subject of a no-expense-spared restoration in 2014/15, which included
an engine upgrade to a fully re-built 5hp Stuart Turner, which could
not be a more correct vintage engine for this sort of thing. She comes
with varnished mahogany decks, engine box and seating, brass
fittings, full-length cover and storage trailer. She’d make a great
tender to a large yacht, but she also looks like a pleasing dayboat just
as she is. Not much is known about her provenance, but she’s thought
to have been built between 1950 and 1960. Length is just 11ft 5in but a
beam of 5ft 1in makes her a roomy boat at the length.
