From Maine to the Med
A special guest this year, and racing in the five-strong Big Boats category, was the
90ft (27.4m) Sumurun. The famous bermudan ketch, owned and skippered by Armin
Fischer, was built to a Fife III design by Fife and Son in 1914, commissioned by a Lady
Victoria for her husband Lord Kent Sackville. These days, she’s normally berthed in
Maine. She has welcomed many famous guests over the years, including Mick Jagger
and, more recently, John Kerry. In 2007, she ran down the NY30 Amorita, cutting her
in two and sinking her. Amorita has since been raised and rebuilt and Sumurun,
which is in the Med for the first time in a decade, is looking forward to doing the
whole racing season in the centre of the classic sailing world.

PORTSMOUTH
Mary Rose
in full view
For the first time since she
was raised from the seabed
in 1982, the 1511-built Tudor
warship can be seen in all her
glory, with no ducting or glass
to get between visitors and
boat. The display space is part
of a £5.4 million revamp of
the museum, which opened
in 2013 at Portsmouth's
Historic Dockyard.

Tom Perkins
1932-
Silicon Valley venture capitalist and leading boat
owner Tom Perkins died aged 84 on 7 June, after
a long illness. Firms he invested in included
Google and Amazon, whose dividends helped
him to own a magnificent series of yachts
including the GL Watson motoryacht Atlantide,
the Herreshoff schooner Mariette and, most
famously of all, the automated square-rigger
Maltese Falcon, launched in 2005. He leaves
behind a son, Tor and a daughter, Elizabeth.

BARCELONA

Local heroes

triumph

The Puig Vela Classica, held every July in the waters
off the Catalonian capital, is known for its reliable
winds, but this year, they were better than ever
according to organisers, with the Garbi thermal wind
blowing at around 13-14 knots for three days solid. It
was a year for Spaniards to triumph, with Jordi
Cabau, friend of CB and owner of Mercury and
Sonata, to win his class, this time on Sonata, the
family-owned yacht designed by John Alden. Local
Damian Ribas also won his class on Alba for the hat
trick. Moonbeam III won for the fifth time in a hotly
contested Big Boats class (also see right) and
Marigold scored her own hat trick in Vintage Gaffers.
Last but not least was another Spaniard, Ramon
Roses of yacht Guia, in the classic (pre-1976) class.
Next year will mark the centenary of this regatta.
