18 CLASSIC BOAT SEPTEMBER 2016

TELL TALES

Britain’s biggest boat show is upon us. For 10 days this September, Southampton’s Mayfl ower Park
will once again host the Southampton Boat Show, with around 110,000 visitors expected to view the
500+ exhibitors. For the most part, these will be exactly what you’d expect at a venue like this, but
since the introduction of the Wooden Boatbuilders’ Trade Association (WBTA) area a few years ago,
the show has quietly become something of a draw for those looking for, or interested in, small
wooden yachts and dayboats – not to mention a few sympathetic vessels dressed in glass alongside,
and bigger classics outside in the marina. Other attractions will include going aboard the 1926 Norwegian three-master TS Artemis,
watching epoxy demonstrations and last, but not least, hearing Classic Boat columnist Dave Selby giving talks on how sailing can be a
cheap hobby. To make the point, Dave is sailing to Southampton from Maldon on his 18ft Sailfi sh, raising money for charity en route.
The Classic Boat team will be at the show, so do stop by our stand E034, where you can update your subscription, or just talk boats!
