(Nandana) #1

Med season starter

The Med classic fl eet was out in force at
Les Voiles d’Antibes, which took place
from 1-5 June in light conditions but
with enough wind for some good racing.
The 21st edition of the early season
regatta, part of the Panerai Classic
Yachts Challenge, saw a dockside lined
with some of the most well-known
yachts including Cambria, Moonbeam III
and IV, Manitou, Rowdy, Serenade,
Argyll and Kelpie.
Marga, the 10-M that won our 2016
Restoration of the Year Award, was
taking part in only her second regatta
since her restoration and performed
well in class, with her owners and
core crew on board.
Classic Boat sailed on the 1936 Fife
ketch Eilean, the yacht restored by
Panerai and now run by the luxury
watch company as its fl agship. The boat
is skippered by Briton Andrew Culley
with an international crew, most there
for the regatta but with a core team of
four who man the boat full-time.
There was disappointment and shock
for the crew of the 1927 Fife 12-M Zinita,
which was dismasted on the Thursday,
with the yacht’s bowman taken to
hospital and released the following day.
The boat’s owners were wasting no time
in talking to a local yard about repairs.
From Antibes, the crews were
heading on to Argentario. Then the
Panerai series relocates to Cowes for
Panerai British Classic Week (see p69).
