RUSTLER 36
The Rustler 36, a Holman and Pye design drawn in 1980, can also trace
its roots back to the Folkboat (rather more nebulously) via the Stella,
Twister, North Sea 24 and Rustler 31 (for build in timber). The 36 is a
drawn-out 31 for build in GRP. It’s still in build today (albeit sporadically)
and, although the Rustler 37 has overtaken it in terms of popularity, the
Rustler team would love to build a 36, partly because it’s the boat that
founded the firm, and partly because it would still be pretty much
unbeatable for the purpose. It’s the most popular boat in the Golden
Globe Race 2018 and on the wish list of at least two boatless
competitors. Past owners include Princess Anne.

Two boats to take you
around the world
Many of the competitors signed up to the 2018 Golden Globe Race are currently lacking a suitable yacht. The rules
stipulate a pre-1986 design with a long keel. In nearly all cases, the competitors have 1960s-designed GRP yachts, or
are looking for one. Two of these are what you might call living legends, being still in production. In reality, entrants
are looking at the secondhand market, but here they are, in all their glittering, brand-new glory. Both are beautiful,
seaworthy, easy to handle and would make a very sensible choice. Both are solid, long-keeled, transom-sterned
GRP bermudan sloops and both can trace their ancestry back to the Folkboat.

C/O JEREMY ROGERS
The Contessa 32 grew from the 26, which in turn derived from
the Folkboat. It’s a David Sadler design with input from
builder Jeremy Rogers, whose son Kit continues to build
them new to this day. The Contessa 32, first launched at
the 1971 London Boat Show, is still synonymous in the
minds of many with the 1979 Fastnet Race, in which the
design proved its great seaworthiness. It has also
become, according to some, the most popular racer/
cruiser ever, with something like 700 built – one is in
build right now.
