J CLASS MAKES A BIG SPLASH
The newest addition to the J Class fleet of classic sailing yachts has hit the water
in the Netherlands, ahead of her regatta debut. Developed in collaboration with
Hoek Design, Svea J-S1 was built at Vitters from an aluminum hull and
superstructure based on the original 1937 drawings by Thore Holm. Measuring
143ft LOA, she is the largest J Class yacht to date and features elegant interiors
by the late Pieter Beeldsnijder. Her classic styling belies some seriously modern
technology with a carbon fiber mast that is 176ft tall. vitters.com
CARIBBEAN CLASSIC
A Feadship with pedigree
and an interesting history
is back on the charter
market. The 126ft Berilda,
launched as Claybeth in
1978, for a time belonged
to Malcolm Forbes.
As Highlander IV she
welcomed a host of
well-known guests but
this classic yacht had
many names and many
lives. Sold to new owners
in 2015, she has joined
the Northrop & Johnson
fleet after an extensive
refit at the Newport
Shipyard in Maine. The
work modernized the
interior and added a
master stateroom with
a walkaround king size
bed. She now comfortably
accommodates 10 guests
who can enjoy alfresco
dining on the main deck
or scatter around the
updated sundeck, which
boasts a new spa pool,
wet bar in granite,
barbecue grill and a
projector and 120 inch
screen for movie time.
She is available year
round for charters in
the Bahamas and the
Caribbean. Charter rate is
from $80,000 per week.

CHARTER
OF THE
MONTH
One of the strangest requests I had was a guest who
wanted to cook dinner for his family, and all the
family came with me to buy the ingredients. They
had antipasti with fresh ricotta, almond and cherry
tomato pesto and grilled marinated vegetables, then
penne alla Norma and parmigiana di melanzane.
My favorite market for provisioning is St-Tropez.
I love to buy fresh monkfish – I coat it
with Moroccan spice and sear cook it in the
oven with white wine for eight minutes.
You can never be too organized. I have found
myself fully prepared with all my dishes for service,
and then 10 minutes before the guests are due to
be seated the main dish is completely changed.

CHEF’S CORNER
The MYBA Charter Show will be taking
place in Barcelona for the first time this
year (April 24 to 27) as part of a new
three year agreement between the
organizers and the Spanish port. This
long running and colorful show is a
trade-only event, but has a strong
reputation for attracting the biggest
names in the charter industry.

BARCELONA BOUND
CHARTER YACHTS CRUISE TO CUBA
With US-Cuban relations
thawing, at least for now, several
top charter yachts are taking
advantage of this untapped
destination and adding a Cuban
itinerary to their offerings.
Celebrity favorite Axioma
(above) is a prominent example,
with the 237ft Dunya yacht
one of the first to get a Cuban
cruising permit. Those looking
for a touch of 1920s glamor can
opt for a stay aboard the 184ft
Oceanco yacht The Wellesley,
which is twinned with the
London hotel of the same
name, so impeccable service
is guaranteed. Classic 164ft
Feadship yacht Highlander
is also getting in on the
Cuban action, while the 139ft
Mondomarine Bina offers a
more intimate, family-friendly
vibe for exploring the “pearl
of the Antilles”. For a more
keenly priced alternative,
try the 139ft Just Enough
by Broward Marine.
Despite its growing
popularity, Cuba still has
limited yachting infrastructure,
so booking through a reputable
charter broker is highly
recommended to avoid any
unpleasant surprises.

BOOK
OF THE
MONTH
This new 183ft explorer from Turquoise
Yachts is every inch the modern
superyacht but the yard has done
an exceptional job of hiding all the
high-tech gadgetry. Take that
steamship-style funnel – it’s actually
a satellite dome. And the canoe-shaped
stern conceals an extendable boarding
platform. Developed in collaboration
with Hoek Design and Vickers Studio, it
is being built in Turkey. Due to splash in
February 2019, her ice-classed hull
means she will be ready to surprise
some penguins. turquoiseyachts.com
