Zaha Hadid left as
much of a mark on the
water with one set of
superyacht designs as many do
with a career’s worth of sketches.
Four years after they were first
released, and on the anniversary
of the Iraq-born architect’s
death, her Unique Circle Yachts
for Blohm+Voss are still among
the most enthralling superyacht
concepts in existence. The family
of designs is based on a 420ft
“mothership” with a sculptural,
fluid form of interwoven meshes
- it does away with a traditional
stacked deck structure in favor
of an exoskeleton that connects
the various levels. The German
yard that built Motor Yacht A
and Palladium was unfazed by
the outré concept, and its naval
architects technically specced
five 295ft designs that could
actually be built. This rendering,
from the first of the 295ft designs,
Jazz, shows how the organic
superstructure benefits interior
spaces with light and connection
to the natural environment.
“As a dynamic object that moves
in dynamic environments, the
design of a yacht must include
additional parameters beyond
those for architecture – which
become much more extreme
on water,” said Hadid.
