NEW ELECTRONICS

FLIR M-Series Thermal-Imaging Cameras
Starting at $2,500; fl ir.com

Th e FLIR M100 and M200 cameras mark the start of a
new era in thermal-imaging. Th ese are the company’s
most compact pan and tilt cameras to date. Both come
equipped with FLIR’s Boson thermal-camera core, which
provides images with 320-by-240 thermal resolution in
low-light and poor-visibility conditions. Th anks to the
company’s proprietary digital detail enhancement, as
well as a 2X digital zoom, these cameras off er an eff ec-
tive range of around 1,500 feet to spot a person in the
water, and more than a half nautical mile to spot another
vessel. Th e M200 off ers remote-control 360-degree
continuous pan and tilt from 90 degrees down to 110
degrees up. Th e M100 off ers a tilt-enabled housing that
allows the camera position to be adjusted remotely
through the same tilt range, to work with the trim of
the boat while underway. FLIR says both cameras are
lightweight and simple to install, and are Ethernet-enabled, using an H264 IP video
stream. Th ey also add artifi cial intelligence features, according to the manufacturer,
and additional functionality when used in conjunction with a Raymarine Axiom
multifunction display from FLIR’s sister company. Th ermal analytics identify potential
“non-water” hazards, such as boats, navaids, and other obstacles, and increase the user’s
awareness with visual and audible cues. FLIR has never played favorites before, and of-
fered a diff erent function set for a specifi c brand of MFD.

Furuno DFF3D Multibeam Sonar
$2,095, plus $1,900 for through-hull transducer; furunousa.com

Furuno’s DFF3D multibeam
sonar is a network sensor that
adds side-scanning function-
ality to its NavNet TZTouch
and TZTouch2 multifunction
displays. Using a 14-inch-long,
multibeam transducer, the
DFF3D off ers side-scanning
range to 650 feet while down-
scanning to depths better
than 1,000 feet, according to
Furuno. Th e transducer has a
built-in motion sensor that keeps the image stable in rough conditions. Th e company’s
proprietary signal processing produces images to help the user fi nd and track fi sh. Four
display modes include triple/single beam sounder, which allows traditional sonar views,
or separate the left , right and center images simultaneously. Meanwhile, sidescan allows
the user a high-defi nition image of structure on either side of the boat. Th e 3D sounder
history lets the user parse a detailed image of the seafl oor to discern targets and optimal
fi shing structure or anchoring locations, while cross section displays a real-time echo of
the water column out 120 degrees to port and starboard. Th e various modes allow the
user the fl exibility to tailor the sonar view to the task at hand. With three- dimensional
fi sh targets displayed in relation to the boat in real time, the DFF3D shares information
that may help improve catch rates.
