Th e Panoptix PS51-TH is a through-hull

phased-array multibeam transducer that

provides the data for forward-looking

sonar, known as FrontVü, for compatible

Garmin EchoMAP and GPSMAP multi-

function display systems. With the proper

helm system installed, the user can simply

plug in the PS51-TH to realize the benefi ts

of forward-looking sonar. Th e transducer

uses a narrow, 20-degree beam focused on

the bottom in front of a moving boat to

help the skipper see possible obstacles and

shallow areas. Th e forward usable range

is about 300 feet, or eight to ten times

the depth of the water. Th e transducer is

equipped with an internal attitude heading

reference system (AHRS) sensor that stabi-

lizes the motion for eff ective use in rough

seas. Th e transducer can be installed aft to

remain in the water on planing hulls, with

a programmable off set to help show the

distance to target from the bow rather than

the transducer’s position. FrontVü can work

in split screen with SideVü and DownVü

to give full, around-the-boat sonar images

in a moving picture with speeds similar to

video. Th e PS51-TH also can off er Garmin’s

LiveVü Forward function, which tracks

the movement of underwater targets even

when the boat is stationary. For boaters and

anglers who want to know what’s going on

beneath the surface, the Garmin PS51-TH

may help fi ll in some of the blanks. U
