When you get a look at the design of the Azimut S7, you may
begin to understand how evolution really works, as good traits
are kept and continued and amplifi ed, while less successful
attributes fall by the wayside. So it goes with yacht styling, and
the renderings we have seen of the S7 surely limn a path toward
the future. (Th e naming convention is also bold and new, as the
previous model in this lineup was called the 77S.) Th e S range
comprises Azimut’s Coupé and Sportfl y models, with hard-
tops and abbreviated fl ying bridges, respectively, that keep the
profi le sleek and brighten the interiors with expansive sunroofs.
Th is 70-footer adheres to the builder’s selective use of carbon
fi ber in her construction—it benefi ts the design, allowing for
larger volume without adding weight and keeping the center
of gravity where the designer wants it. Th at smart construc-
tion with a triple Volvo Penta IPS powerplant and Volvo Penta’s
active trim interceptor system and joystick maneuvering all will
combine for resulting performance—and a projected 35-knot

top speed—to befi t her profi le. Her four-stateroom layout, plus
crew’s quarters, is designed by Francesco Guida and is expected
to match the elegance of the Stefano Righini exterior. Expanses
of sunpad forward, aft , and on the fl ying bridge will show guests
what relaxation is all about, the concept taken a step further as
it evolves. Th e S7 will make her world premiere at the Yachting
Festival de Cannes in September, and then come to the United
States in November at the Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show.

At the Yachts Miami Beach Show, I took a tour of the new (and
scheduled to launch later this summer) Hatteras 90 Motor
Yacht—what a trip! While more or less holding station in physi-
cal space, I checked out the whole whopping layout, from stem
to stern, thanks to a set of Virtual Reality goggles, two video-
game-type controllers, and a few friendly Hatteras employees
who kept me from walking into very real walls. (Learn more
about this 3-D experience in Power & Technology on page 22.)
Let me hit you with some pertinent details. For starters, the 90’s
broken-sheer profi le
hews closely to those
of the two sisterships
already inhabiting
the Hatteras big-boat
line, the 70 Motor
Yacht and the 100
Raised Pilothouse.
Th en, too, she off ers
an exceptional array

of customizable features, given the straightforwardness of her
four-stateroom-four-head envelope—everything from galley
location on the main deck (forward or amidships) to an option
that installs fold-down balconies in the bulwarks. And fi nally, says
Hatteras, she’ll boast some impressive engineering attributes, like
a powerful 45-horsepower hydraulic bow thruster, double-bottom
integrated fuel tanks, and (at 40 kilowatts each) two equally sized
gensets. And oh, the VR tour? Lemme tell ya—this baby’s gonna
be bright, contemporary, and elegant. I know because, virtually
speaking, I’ve been there. hatterasyachts.com —Capt. Bill Pike
