A different tack

On page 36 is a long read on a pair of Harris pontoon boats,
a style of vessel we rarely cover. Why the long read on such
oddballs? They represent yet another way to get on the
water, markedly different to what we would normally cover
but exciting nonetheless. I like to think that we look at more
than traditional boats and offer ideas beyond expectation,
and it may surprise you to know they are exceptionally
popular. Did you know that during the recession and in the
immediate years following, pontoon boats like the Harris
were part of the fastest-growing boat segment in the US?
It surprised me when reading the stats released by the
Boating Industry US that at one stage one in three new boat
sales was a pontoon. The style showed signs of growth here
a few years back but I believe this was mainly driven by the
low cost of the US dollar, as they never really took off. Now
Australasian agent Harris Australia has bucked the trend
and instead of sourcing cheap pontoons it’s headed straight
for the best of the bunch. Have a read of two models that
took my and Bear’s breath away, both metaphorically
and literally thanks to their big-power outboards. And, as
always, send us your feedback.

It’s hard to get a full recap of the show inside these pages
with our limited space and the equally worthwhile other
news we have, so here are a few more thoughts. Moving
the dates of the show away from the coming Sanctuary
Cove International Boat Show, with which it had clashed
in recent years, was the best thing the organisers could
have done and it wasn’t just me who thought so. Talking
to exhibitors, not one suggested the clash was a good idea
and judging by the record crowd, the public agreed. Aside
from the increased popularity from both sides of the sales
desks, the show itself was familiar in layout, which is great
as it has a fantastic follow-me coloured line system, and
definitely had a great deal to see and do, with new releases
from Signature, Malibu, Clipper and more. The on-water
demonstrations by Telwater/Quintrex and Mercury Marine
are unique to the show and a real boon for prospective
buyers as it puts them face-to-face not only with brand
leaders but also a range of products from which they can
build greater understanding. If you’re a buyer, this style of
show-and-tell really is the most valuable. Standouts can be
seen in our short recap following News.
Tight lines,
Tim
