The final day sees the
shortest course yet at
23 nautical miles for
the entire fleet. Three
leaders – Nilaya in Class
A, Freya in Class C and
Perseus^3 in Class
D – all need to win to
complete the sweep.
In Class B today, the
winner between P2
and Ganesha will win
the class.

DAY
“The cannon has become our
signature move. The poor fellow who
has to fire the cannon has the hardest
job because you don’t want to misfire.
But we had a great race with Ganesha,
it seems it always comes down
between us. Matt Humphries and
crew are incredible competitors,
but we like to think we’re getting
better and better at sailing P2. We
all take pride in getting on the podium
here. It’s a big deal.” – Tony Rey,
tactician, P2

Fifteen minutes after starting,
Class C rivals Grande Orazio
and Ammonite approach the
first turning mark. These two
have locked horns all weekend
and now they’re shouting back
and forth about the rules.
Showing how competitive
superyacht racing is, both
boats exit the turning mark
with protest flags flying, but
cooler heads prevail later and
neither follows through.

P2 passes the Seal Dog
Islands two minutes ahead
of Ganesha, which is hunting
for class honours. Ganesha's
crew attempt to set their
spinnaker but, as it is being
hoisted, it tears on the
lifelines. The crew is forced
to lower the sail and set
an alternate smaller sail.
This takes an agonising four
minutes, time that P2 uses
to extend her lead.

Freya crosses the finish line and
wins her class for the second
consecutive year and third time
in the past four years – extending
her winning streak to five events.
The crew were victorious at last
year’s Loro Piana Caribbean
Superyacht Regatta &
Rendezvous and at the 2016
St Barth’s Bucket, the Rolex Swan
Cup last September in Sardinia
and finally the Rolex Swan Cup in
Virgin Gorda in March.

The 38m Briand design P2
from Perini Navi crosses the
line ahead of Ganesha to
win Class B for the second
consecutive year. Owner Dr
Ed Bosarge orders the crew
to fire their cannon – a 39
inch barrel, two inch bore
armament captured from
the French frigate Le Médée
in 1801. The crew estimates
they’ve fired it about 10
times in the past two days.

The 34m Nilaya crosses the finish line to complete her sweep
of Class A. She wins all three races by an average of more than
six minutes and also captures overall honours for the second
consecutive year and third time in the past four years. If any
yacht owns a regatta, it’s Nilaya at the Loro Piana Caribbean
Superyacht Regatta & Rendezvous.

Clockwise from above: Ammonite and Grande
Orazio just visible through the spray; Shamanna
prepares to pass Ningaloo; the fleet underway;
sail change time on Grande Orazio; the full
splendour of Southern Wind's vessel (left); P2
bags a second consecutive win

“It was a fantastic week
and the crew did a great
job. What makes it so
special is to sail here
in the Virgin Islands,
at the Yacht Club Costa
Smeralda, with Loro
Piana as a sponsor, it’s
just a wonderful event”
Don Macpherson,
owner, Freya
