Boat International – June 2017

(Michael S) #1

EDITORS’ LETTERS

Even for those of us baffled by the America’s
Cup rules of engagement, never mind the rules
for victory, the excitement surrounding this
June’s sailing super race is unavoidable.
No one better captures this than the new First
Lady of Bermuda: journalist and broadcaster

  • and guest editor of this issue – Georgie Ainslie.
While her husband Ben leads the British
challenge with the Land Rover BAR team,
Georgie has curated a sailing-inspired issue,
bringing together the chicest additions to your
onboard wardrobe, the best interiors for your
sailboat and even insider tips on getting your
body ship shape for regatta season. She also
interviewed the maverick 1992 America’s Cup
winner Bill Koch (page 178). It’s an inspiring story
of how a man with an extraordinary
understanding of science took on the
professionals and won, proving that sometimes
dreams do come true. We at Boat International
wish Land Rover BAR the best of luck in making
their dreams of victory come true this June.

What more could you possibly want in a sailing
special? Sybaris, the 70m super-modern
super-sailer from Perini Navi; Svea, the modern
classic and new flagship of the J Class fleet at
43.6m; and Creole, the genuine classic, the 65m
yacht that has been one of the most talked about
sailers on the seas since her launch back in 1927.
And if you’re after some heart-thumping,
nail-biting regatta action, that’s in here too.
We suspect a few more of you might get the
racing bug after events in Bermuda this month
and next, so we’ve also put together a guide to
the world’s finest superyacht regattas to help you
decide where to compete (page 184). If you’re in
the southern hemisphere in January 2018, you
shouldn’t miss the Millennium Cup, which we’ve
recently partnered with. I’m told there’s no finer
cruising ground than New Zealand’s Bay of Islands.
I look forward to finding out for myself whether
these claims stack up. Ask your captain to start
thinking about the delivery now and join us there.
