Ben Williams is head of physical
performance at Land Rover BAR.
He and his partner Helen live in
Southsea, near Portsmouth, UK.
He explains how he gets maximum
power out of the crew (page 67).
What do you like most about
training the Land Rover BAR team?
I like the culture of elite team sport.
You’re able to share the successes
and failures together
What trait do these sailors need
above all else?
It would be nice if they were tidier!

What is the team’s
mantra?
To create a sustainable
team driven by passion,
humility and respect
that creates a legacy for
the future of sailing
Does the team ever rest?
Sure they do. Rest is just as
important as the training
What do you like about the America’s
Cup? I am lucky enough to do a job
that I love and enjoy every day that
I walk out of my front door

Kate Lardy has been working on
and around yachts for more than two
decades, most recently as editor of
ShowBoats magazine, and often sails
the Bahamas on her Lagoon catamaran.
Kate wrote this month’s feature on the
best superyacht regattas (page 184).
What makes a good regatta?
Good wind, good parties and everyone
leaving with all their fingers and toes!
Which regatta is on your bucket list?
Definitely the Millennium Cup.

My race crew sources tell me that the
Bay of Islands has the most scenic
racing of any superyacht regatta
Who is the most important person to
know? Anyone with a yacht there, of
course, so you can get a place on board
What is in your regatta survival kit?
A sun hat, sunglasses, SPF 50 suncream
and dancing shoes — and everything
in a carry-on. As they say, you or your
luggage will make it to St Barths, but
not both in one go!

Broadcaster Georgie Ainslie guest
edited this issue from Bermuda
where her husband Sir Ben Ainslie is
leading the British challenge for the
America’s Cup with the Land Rover
BAR team. Georgie has covered
numerous sporting events for Sky
Sports, Fox Sports and Radio 5 Live.
What did you enjoy the most about
guest editing this issue?
I loved all of it. As a journalist I really
enjoy pulling a story together and this
was that but on a much grander scale
Which story interested you most?
I loved Andre Hoek’s piece on the
Porsche 911. It’s a classic that has
stood the test of time. All any of us
can hope for is to look that good at 50!
How would you describe previous
America’s Cup winner Bill Koch?
Bill is that kid who dreamed big
and made those dreams happen
What will you and Ben do once the
America’s Cup is over?
Take a holiday where there is no
phone or internet connection
Which items do you most covet
from this issue?
Bill Koch’s art collection

Keith Dovkants is a Fleet Street veteran who has covered
wars, natural disasters and the occasional Cowes Week.
He sails out of the UK’s River Hamble on his 16.5m ketch,
La Allamanda. Keith wrote this month’s feature on the great
characters who have competed in the America’s Cup (page 132).
What do you find alluring about the America’s Cup?
It has that fatal attraction of being intensely desirable but
virtually unattainable
What was the most interesting thing you discovered?
The way Sir Thomas Lipton – our biggest loser – won the
hearts of sporting Americans
Who was your favourite challenger?
Alan Bond - the rascal who broke the longest winning streak
Who is your money on to win this year?
Team Land Rover BAR. As the writer Damon Runyon said:
“The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong...
but that’s the way you want to bet”
