Sailing yachts over 24m sold and delivered 2009 – 2016

THE GIANT - Sailing Yacht A

Designed by Philippe Starck and recently
delivered by Nobiskrug, Sailing Yacht A
will be the largest superyacht delivered in
2017 and the largest yacht with sails in the
world, with a length of 142.81m.

THE BEAUTY - Black Pearl

Built by Oceanco, with a design team
composed of Dykstra Naval Architects,
Nuvolari Lenard, Ken Freivokh and her
owner, this 106m DynaRig project is a
concentration of technology reminiscent of
another iconic yacht, Maltese Falcon.

THE BEAST – Ngoni

Built by Royal Huisman, Ngoni is one of
the last projects from the late Ed Dubois.
She is modern and designed for high
performance thanks to her sculpted 58m
aluminium hull, her 71m carbon Rondal
mast and her lifting keel.

here’s no shortage of doom and gloom
around the superyacht sailing market
at the moment, but as the figures to the
right demonstrate, demand on the brokerage
side is holding. The number of deliveries is
clearly down, but measuring 2009 – a bumper
year propelled by pre-GFC confidence –
against today is not necessarily a fair
comparison. This year, in fact, will see 24
sailing superyachts delivered, the first increase
in a number of years.
David Tydeman, CEO of Oyster Yachts, says
the decline in orders can partly be explained by
the deals being offered on the brokerage
market. “Above 24 metres, owners have been
accepting large discounts selling one-off
custom yachts three to five years old at 30 to
40 per cent off the new build price and five
to 10 years old at 50 to 60 per cent off,” he says.
“Not only does this represent opportunity to
buy well, it also makes depreciation a more
significant barrier to placing a new order.”
Another barrier to growth is the
dependence on repeat clients for the major
sailing yards and a lack of newcomers. “Sixty
per cent of the yachts we’ve ever sold over 24
metres have traded up from Oysters below 20
metres. The market for sailing yachts has
always had lower numbers of clients than
people think,” says Tydeman. “And sailing has
always required more knowledge and more
understanding than large motor yachts.”
The Oyster CEO says events like regattas
are key to luring new owners into sailing, even
if they already own a motor yacht. “The Loro
Piana events and St Barths Bucket have been
good in bringing new people to events, but
then they want to do it faster or better and
move to a proper raceboat. You need to have a
differentiator – a reason to accept the real total
cost. That reason now seems to be ‘for regattas
I want to win’.”
The recent surge in interest in huge sailing
projects is anticipated to help bring further
attention to the market – two 100m-plus giants
will be delivered this year. Across the rest of
the market, there are currently 85 sailing
superyachts in build, 23 of which are on hold.
