repellents every few years, and the most recent results of its work

showed that repellents containing DEET, at various concentrations,

continue to be the most effective at repelling bugs.

NEW APPROACH

So what’s a boater to do? A couple of years ago we decided to try

a product that has become popular with anglers and hunters across

the country: Thermacell.

After using the Thermacell

for a couple of years, we

have found it be the most

effective way to fend off

the attackers. We have seen

deer- and horsefl ies that

happen into the cabin exit

as quickly as they entered,

and the mosquitoes and

no-see-ums are nonexistent.

Extensive testing in the U.S. and foreign countries such

as Costa Rica, Korea and Turkey has been conducted on the

butane-powered Thermacell

Mosquito Repellent unit

for effectiveness for biting

insects. Results refl ect that

the unit is effective against

mosquitoes, sand fl ies,

no-see-ums and black fl ies.

harm humans or pets and

is advertised to be up to 96

percent effective in repelling

biting creatures, and our

TREATING BITES AND STINGS

If you spend time on the British Columbia coast or in southeast

Alaska, it’s inevitable that insect bites and bee stings are going to

happen. Bites and stings are annoying and the itching, throbbing

and swelling that follows is maddening. So what do we do when we

are bitten or stung? There are many products on the market today

to address symptoms and we have found products such as StingEze

Insect Bite Relief and Tecnu Bite and Sting to be effective. When

applied soon after an insect bite — the sooner, the better — they

begin working immediately to counteract the effects of bites and

stings from bees, mosquitoes and fl ies. They provide pain relief, kill

germs, reduce infection, and inhibit the growth of bacteria.

You may not be able to avoid these blood sucking insects, but you

can minimize the encounters.
