WHAT’S NEW

NEW SHOREBOAT
SERVICE IN AVALON
„ AVALON’S CITY COUNCIL awarded
Catalina Coastal Tours and Fishing a
contract to offer shoreboat services,
according to The Log. This is the second
time an RFP for shoreboat service was
issued by the council, which sweetened
the pot with a $250,000 subsidy. Catalina
Coastal Tours and Fishing will use two
custom-built, U.S. Coast Guard–certified
WingCat boats that can carry 19 to 21
passengers, and the boats are expected to
be ready in time for the summer season.
This is the first time the city of Avalon is
subsidizing the shoreboat service in the
harbor.

DREDGING MOVES FORWARD
„ PHASE 1 OF the Grand Canal dredging
project, which included the South Bay
Front and Park Avenue areas around
Balboa Island and began Dec. 5, 2016, was
completed in February. Dredging is needed
for this channel as it is difficult for boaters
to navigate in low tides, and because the
seawalls were starting to erode at the base,
sand was added to support them. The
total cost of the first dredging phase was
$379,545, and all of the sediment that was
dredged was deemed appropriate for ocean
disposal.

BALBOA MARINE WEST
„ PLANS TO EXPAND and update a
marina in Newport Beach were unani-
mously approved by the California Coastal
Commission during the state agency’s
February meetings. A proposal to bring 26
additional boat slips, public dock space —
something sorely missing in this portion
of the bay — and a one-story restaurant to
Balboa Marina West in Newport Harbor’s
Lower Bay will move forward after receiv-
ing the support of commissioners Feb. 9.
