MINE WASHED UP
Police and Coastguard
personnel were called in to deal
with a Naval mine that washed up
on a beach in mid-September.
Army Ammunition Technical
Offi cers were also summoned
to the scene at Ballycastle,
Co. Antrim, where the mine was
eventually destroyed in a
controlled explosion.
Mines were laid close to the
entrance to Lough Foyle during
the Second World War in order to
protect Allied shipping during the
Battle of the Atlantic.

YACHT TOWED INTO
WHITEHAVEN
A 25ft yacht had to be towed
into Whitehaven harbour on
7 September after suffering
engine failure. Members of St
Bees RNLI received reports just
after 4pm about the yacht which
was en route to Whitehaven.
A spokesman for St Bees RNLI
said: ‘The volunteer crew quickly
arrived on scene but
unfortunately due to the state of
the tide they were unable to tow
the vessel into Whitehaven
Harbour until after 9pm.
‘As the sailing boat and its
skipper were not in any
immediate danger it was decided
that the best course of action was
for the lifeboat to return to the
station and wait for the tide.’
He said St Bees RNLI fl ank
station at Workington launched at
around 9pm and towed the yacht
safely into Whitehaven Harbour
where they were met by
members of Whitehaven HM
Coastguard.

Texa had been out of the water
for nearly three decades, when
David Adams McGilp and
Howard Nixon acquired her for

1988 and sailed up and down the
west of Scotland for many
seasons afterwards. David of
Lochgilphead, Argyll, the
custodian of Texa, said the yacht
was hauled out again four years
ago and is now about to undergo
another restoration, before going
to the Scottish Maritime Museum

SOUTHWOLD PICOS
Southwold Sailing Club has been
awarded £10,000 from the Big
Lottery Fund to buy six boats and
train fi ve instructors in a bid to
inspire people to embrace the
sport. Robin Watkins, the
commodore of Southwold Sailing
Club said his aim was to
encourage people to abandon a
‘Game Boy’ culture of mobile
phones and video games. He
said: ‘Sailing can be challenging
at times, but if you pick the right
day then you can have a really
good experience. It is about
getting people off their backsides.
They will get wet and tired, but
they will come away with a
good experience.’
