film delays

The film about Donald
Crowhurst’s Ill-fated attempt to
win the Golden Globe race will
now be released in the UK next
year. The Mercy, which stars
Colin Firth as Crowhurst and
Rachel Weisz as his wife,
Claire, was scheduled to be
released on 27 October 2017.
Now the IMDb website is
listing the film as being
released in the UK on
9 February 2018.
Don McIntyre, organiser of
the 50th Anniversary race that
will be sailed next year,
claimed: ‘They have held the

release date to partly hook into
the 2018 50th anniversary
edition of the original 1968
Golden Globe’
Directed by James Marsh,
The Mercy follows Crowhurst’s
attempt to race around the
world to win the 1968-
Golden Globe Race on his
trimaran, Teignmouth Electron,
and his subsequent descent
into falsehood and madness.

PBO Columnist Dave Selby
has released a book of his
early writings. The Impractical
Boat Owner: Tales and Trials
from years of Floundering
Afloat is a collection of Dave’s
columns, expanded for the
book, and with additional
‘Lessons Not Learned’ hints
and tips boxes, all illustrated

with cartoons by Jake
Kavanagh. Themes covered
include: First attempts at
sailing, how not
to sail singlehanded,
mysteries of maintenance,
how not to sail with a dog, the
impenetrable mysteries of
navigation and weather and
how not to race. The

Impractical Boat Owner is an
antidote to all that’s written
about expensive shiny new
yachts, self-improvement, the
quest for qualifications and
practical skills.

Dave Selby’s The Impractical
Boat Owner is published by
Bloomsbury, costs £9.99.

Britain Afloat: new BBC boating

series to air this autumn

A replacement skipper has
been appointed for the
Greenings team in the
Clipper Round the World
Race after the original
skipper, David Hartshorn, had
to be evacuated by helicopter
following a serious hand
injury. Andy Woodruff, 41,
from Poole, has been named
interim skipper and was due
to join the team in Punta del
Este, Uruguay, at the end of
September.

Describing his new role,
Andy, who already has over
60,000 nautical miles in his
log-book, commented: “It is a
great honour to be joining
such a prestigious global
event as the Clipper Race. My
aim is to continue the
fantastic work that David
Hartshorn has started on
board Greenings.
I believe it is important that
the crew get the most out of
this experience as possible,

not just on the leaderboard
but also within themselves,
though of course I am keen
to get them as many points
as possible in the process!’
Leg 2, the 3,560-mile South
Atlantic Challenge, from
Uruguay to Cape Town, will
start on 4 October 2017 and
will take approximately 17
days to complete. From Cape
Town, the Clipper Race will
continue on to Fremantle in
Western Australia.

Mary-Ann Ochota filming the first episode, Thames Barges

Sailors craving their nautical fix
might like to tune in to BBC 2
on Saturday evenings this
autumn. A new BBC series,
Britain Afloat, sees presenter
Mary-Ann Ochota travel the
coasts and waterways of
Britain, discovering how boats
have shaped the lives of the
people that use them. Starting
on Saturday 30 September
(available on iPlayer in UK) at
8.30pm, the series runs for the
next six Saturdays.
The series explores the
regional diversity in boat
design and the floating way of
life, from the modest coracle –
whose shape was adapted to
suit individual rivers across
Britain – to the imposing
Thames sailing barges – boats
that helped build London.

In each episode, Mary-Ann
uncovers the story of a
different boat’s design and
evolution and discovers the
impact it had on the people
and communities who have
used it, both in days gone by,
and today.

Schedule
BBC 2, Saturdays, 8.30pm
Part 1: Thames barges
Part 2: The coracle
Part 3: The narrow boat
Part 4: The punt
Part 5: Mersey sailing boats
Part 6: The rowing eight
