Motor Boat & Yachting — November 2017

(Tuis.) #1

The biggest compliment one could
pay the Hardy 65 is that although it’s
effectively the same boat as the Hardy
62 that made its debut five years ago,
it feels brand new. This isn’t just a lick
of paint and some new carpet – this
is a total reconfiguration of the decks
and interior and very different engines.
Gone is the gloomy teak-clad
saloon of old and in its place, a
welcoming, contemporary living
space with attractive contrasting
grey Alpi and Wenge woods and deep
luxurious carpet. The galley is now
on the main deck and not tucked

away below and the internal staircase
has gone (though it is still an option)
to allow more light into the much-
improved bridge area.
Below, the master cabin benefits
from topside windows and a more
sensible location for the ensuite just
inside the entrance. Dark teak and
traditional fittings are replaced with
vibrant materials and high-quality
fixtures, and a walk-in wardrobe
has replaced the previous model’s
famous gun cabinet.
The 65’s flybridge layout is
immeasurably better than the 62’s
and features a comfortable dinette
amidships with a sizable wet bar
and much more practical seating
for guests around the upper helm.
The alterations have transformed
Hardy’s flagship model from talented
but flawed to one of this year’s
showstoppers.

Brig is now the largest builder of RIBs
in the world, but this new 10m model
takes them into uncharted territory
in terms of size and ambition.
The Eagle 10 is quite a beast, with
a top speed of 55 knots from a pair
of the latest twin-prop Suzuki 350hp
engines, although its emphasis is on
fast, comfortable cruising rather than
all-out performance.
A relatively wide 3.4m beam creates
space for a proper dinette and wet bar
on the aft deck while a large centre
console provides good protection
for the helm with a double berth and
toilet tucked beneath it. The squared-
off bow houses a large sunpad and a
proper electric windlass. Orca hypalon

tubes and a stepless deep-vee hull
should ensure good longevity and
a comfortable ride. The hull has
a ten-year warranty with five years
for the tubes and engines, all for a
starting price of less than £150,000.

Brig Eagle 10

This is a really handsome little boat
with purposeful looks, solid build and
a practical layout. Flip-up seats in the
cockpit ensure it’s equally useable for
fishing or cruising with full canopies
for cold days, integrated fender
stowage and a deep asymmetric
side deck for easy access to the bow.
A helm door adds ventilation and
makes single-handed cruising easier.
Inside the wheelhouse there’s a
four-person dinette with a flip-over

backrest that converts the front half
into a forward-facing nav bench
underway. Below, there’s a separate
forward cabin with a cutout in the
bed for getting changed, a proper
little heads and another curtained-
off double berth under the cockpit.
Single or twin outboard power
gives a good balance of performance,
efficiency and easy maintenance.
If the relatively deep-vee 20º hull lives
up to its rugged looks, it should make
a great little package, a little like a mini
outboard-powered Botnia Targa.
