Faulty cooker leads to carbon monoxide deaths in Whitby

Fishing vessel owner Timothy Bowman
Davies has been jailed following two
deaths from carbon monoxide (CO)
poisoning aboard his boat Eshcol.
The 44 year old was sentenced to
15 months at Leeds Crown Court after
pleading guilty to two charges brought
by the Maritime and Coastguard
Agency (MCA) for unsafe operation
of a fishing vessel and failing to ensure
the gas cooker was maintained.
Eshcol arrived in Whitby on
January 14 2014. On board were
skipper Mark Arries and Edward
Ide, who both spent the night on
board. Crewmen on nearby vessels
became concerned after observing
no movement aboard next morning.
Two of them subsequently broke
into the wheelhouse and discovered

London marina for sale

St Katharine Docks is on the market

Private equity group Blackstone has placed St Katharine Docks up for sale.
The 170-berth marina, which underwent a major upgrade earlier this year,
was acquired by the company as part of a £448 million deal when it bought
the Max Property Group. Max Property
had purchased the site as part of
a £156 million acquisition in 2011.
Situated next to Tower Bridge, St
Katharine Docks is London’s only city-
centre marina and can accommodate
yachts up to 40m. It is also home to
about 80 companies including offices
and catering outlets. The sale is being
handled by CBRE at a figure of £435m.

The vessel was not fi tted with a CO detector
and the cooker was shown to be defective

the bodies of Arries and Ide. The
LPG-fired cooker was lit.
The boat was not fitted with a CO
detector and the cooker was shown to
be defective. Eshcol was inspected by
the MCA and detained with 34 defects.
In passing sentence, HHJ Bayliss
QC said, “Those who employ others
and whose actions create a risk of
harm must take the consequences
when harm results, such as here.”
Although this incident occurred on
board a commercial vessel, this is the
latest in a series of carbon monoxide-
related deaths on boats of all kinds. In

November 2016, a 72-year-old died
in Cardiff when exhaust fumes from
his Draco’s engine escaped into the
cockpit. Another couple died in
Wroxham in June 2016 when carbon
monoxide from their Doral’s engine
was sucked into the cockpit canopy.
David Fenner, fishing vessel policy
manager with the MCA, said it is
strongly recommended that CO
alarms are installed in every enclosed
space that contains a fired cooking
or heating appliance and where an
engine exhaust penetrates through
the wheelhouse or crew space.
