Austal has opened its
vessel sustainment office
in Cairns, which will
employ almost 30 people.
Austal VP Defence,
Davyd Thomas AO CSC,
was in Cairns to meet
staff and host supplier
engagement forums for
the company’s bid for the
$3billion Offshore Patrol
Vessel (OPV ) program.
“Cairns and Darwin
provide essential
sustainment support for

Australia’s naval maritime
requirements.
“Given our sustainment
program on the Cape Class
fleet and upcoming work
on the PPB support, it
makes sense to establish a
prominent and permanent
base in Cairns,” he said.
Cairns will support
19 Pacific Patrol Boat
Replacements, and 10
Cape Class patrol boats
operated by the Australian
Border Force and RAN.

Stuart Proctor has taken
over as managing director of
Fremantle Pilots, replacing
Greg Tonnison, after a
maximum five-year tenure.
Tonnison oversaw many
developments, including
the acquisition of its own
building and the purchase
of the Fremantle pilot boat
Berkeley (pictured).
Tonnison thanked the
company’s stakeholders,
clients and all those who
assisted and supported
Fremantle Pilots during the

significant growth period. He
is back full-time piloting and
is on the executive.
Proctor joined Fremantle
Pilots in 2010 as a pilot and
spent the past two years as
its operations director.
He has more than 20
years’ pilot experience,
handling over 5000 vessels.
His knowledge in maritime
operations includes
previous roles as a marine
representative, offshore
operations manager, and
harbour master.

emissions, and improved
vessel performance. In
Green Mode, zero emissions
operation is possible while
smokeless operation is
achievable at all load points
and all modes. Reduced
engine hours lowers
maintenance requirements
and extends intervals
between overhauls, while
other claimed benefits
include instantaneous
load acceptance with rapid
response to step-load
changes, entire system
certification and guaranteed
performance.
Wärtsilä will have
dedicated HY versions for
each vessel category, with
the first being designed for
tugs and medium ferries.
The first order is from
Italian Rimorchiatori Riuniti,
for a new 80-tonne bollard
pull harbour tug that is
expected to be in service by
the beginning of 2019.

Wärtsilä has introduced
its HY hybrid marine
power system. Drawing
on its engine design and
electrical and automation
(E&A) systems capabilities,

it features engines,
energy storage and power
electronics optimised to
work together through a
newly developed energy
management system (EMS)

claimed to be the first of its
type for the marine sector.
Wärtsilä claims enhanced
operational efficiency
and flexibility, lower fuel
consumption, reduced
