Hart Marine launched its
latest pilot boat in May,
part of a steady stream
of such vessels from the
Victorian boat builder.
Takoko is destined
for Gladstone Ports
Corporation, to join the
existing fleet of four
pilot vessels that service
the Ports of Gladstone,
Bundaberg and Alma
(Rockhampton). It will
support Gladstone Marine
Pilot Services, a wholly
owned subsidiary of GPC.

the $3 million self-righting
Takoko is a Pantocarene
ORC 173 design. The
17.3m-long pilot boat has
a 32kt maximum, with
power from twin 750hp
Scania DI16 0706M diesels
delivered by Veem Star-C
five bladed propellers.
Hart Marine delivered
its first ORC 173 to Svitzer
Australia in January. Svitzer
Seara is fitted with a pair of
650hp Yanmar diesels, also
driving Veem propellers,
giving a maximum speed
of 27kt. Svitzer ordered the
pilot boat after signing a
20-year marine services
contract for the Chevron-
operated Wheatstone
project in November 2013.
A month after the
completion of Svitzer Seara,
Hart Marine completed
Hellyer, a 15.6m ORC 156
pilot boat for TasPorts.
With the same propulsion
configuration as Svitzer’s
vessel, the slightly smaller
vessel achieves a maximum
speed of 28kt.
Another two ORC 156
vessels with the same
propulsion arrangement
are in production. The
first of these is scheduled
for delivery to PrimePort
Timaru in July, with the
second heading to the Port
of Townsville in October.
Pilot Ahead!
The Nelson Marlborough
Institute of Technology has
selected Kongsberg Digital
to supply a suite of new
navigation simulators for
the International Maritime
Institute of New Zealand.
Awarded in March 2017
following a competitive
tender, the contract covers
a total of seven Kongsberg
bridge simulators for
delivery in August 2017, in
addition to regional exercise
models and a long-term
support program, which
guarantees access to the
latest technology updates
and dedicated customer
support.
The simulator
delivery will be based
on Kongsberg’s K-Sim
technology, featuring one
Class A bridge, two Class
B bridges (one with tug
functions) and four Class C
ECDIS simulators, with an
option for two more.
The bridge simulators
will be integrated with
existing engine simulators,
enabling the Institute to
extend its course portfolio
with crew resource
management training. In
addition, the Institute can
ofer training for bridge
and engineering students
covering daily operations
and emergencies
throughout the vessel.
The simulator suite
will also become a
facility for pilot training,
with Kongsberg and the
Institute developing and
tuning existing databases
covering Nelson, Picton,
Queen Charlotte Sounds
and Wellington, enabling
pilots to train on accurate
and realistic models of their
home operational areas.

The inaugural directors of
Seafood Industry Australia
(SIA) have chosen Veronica
Papacosta as the chair elect
for the new peak body.
Papacosta is managing
director of Sydney Fresh
Seafood and emerged as
a central figure over the
past year in the National
Seafood Industry Australia
(NSIA) project to create a
new national body for the
Australian seafood industry.
She was a member of the
leadership task force that
developed the SIA structure
and funding model. Veronica
was then appointed chair of
the implementation group
and engaged with seafood
businesses across wild catch,
aquaculture and post-
harvest to gather a critical

mass of ‘letters of intent’ as
commitments to join SIA as
financial members.
“I am honoured to be
selected as the first chair for
SIA and very excited with
the high level of support
received from all industry
sectors across Australia to
form SIA. Seafood businesses
want SIA to be an influential
national body that will create
real value,” Papacosta said.
“There is much work to
be done, but with a talented
and experienced group of
people who will become the
inaugural board, we are in a
great position to form SIA as
the influential organisation
envisaged in the prospectus
last year.”
Chauncey Hammond
was elected deputy chair
and Belinda Wilson will be
company secretary. The
other board members are
Marshall Betzel, Dennis
Holder, Mark Ryan, and
Marcus Stehr.
