Powertrain specialist
Reintjes has demonstrated
its recently developed BAE
HybriGen Zero system, a
hybrid step-up gearbox
suitable for retrofit.
The product features a
front-mounted gearbox
combined with a
permanent-magnet electric
generator up to 300kW,which can also be used as
a substitute starter in place
of the air starting system.
The use of the PTO makes
it possible to switch of
onboard gensets during
operation.
The system comprises
a BAE Systems electric
motor and gearbox with
an integrated multi-discclutch, flexible coupling on
the input side, bellhousing
for direct generator mount,
and shaft for direct engine
connection.
Benefits claimed by the
German company include
reductions in operating
costs, emissions, and
maintenance costs.
Reintjes believes hybridsolutions such as this
will be a feature in future
vessels. In anticipation
of this it will also expand
its existing hybrid RHS
(Reintjes Hybrid System)
for new builds. Battery
packs will round out the
scope of gearbox, electric
motor, frequency converter
and remote controls.Port Macquarie-based

contractor Birdon has
been selected through
competitive tender to be
the caretaker of the former
HMAS Tobruk as it awaits
scuttling preparation in
Bundaberg, Qld.The project is for the
scuttled vessel to become
a dive site in Hervey Bay;
she is due to be sunk by
late 2018 and expected to
attract thousands of divers
each year.
As a commitment to the
local community and stategovernment, Birdon said
it intended to use local
people and businesses
whenever possible, with
a focus on those that
served in or for the ADF,
particularly any who served
on HMAS Tobruk, which
