Big boat
experiences
If you read my previous note, you’ll remember I had a
chance to review the new Integrity 530 Grand Sedan
straight after SCIBS. The test came through and will be in
print next issue, in time for the Sydney International Boat
Show where she’ll make her NSW debut.
Spoiler alert – she turned in a very un-Integrity-like
18.8kt top speed. I’ve been aboard a few others in the
range and thought the slow life was a brand cornerstone –
apparently not.
While on the coast we were also treated to a pair of
impressive Euros – the show-stopping Lagoon 630 Motor
Yacht, plus my third and the last of the current range of
Axopars, the 24. This month’s cover boat, the Maritimo M70,
drew a steady crowd and secured many sales we hear, but
the positioning of the 630 in a corner pen, the hue of the
hull and the 10m beam meant it was on everybody’s lips.
Not sure which issue that test will be in but it still resonates
with me for the ability of such a big platform to be able
to accommodate and entertain so many people while
remaining trans-ocean capable.
The ‘little’ Axopar 24 on the other hand didn’t surprise
me at all – it only reinforced what I already know and love
about the brand. When I set of on a review of the 28 (Trade-
a-Boat #472) I found the revolutionary hull spectacular
but I remained reserved about the design. However, after
accompanying John Ford on his test of the 37 Cabin and
Suntop (#485) in what can only be described as diabolical
conditions through the Sydney Heads, I was sold. The 24
could have swung my opinion about the axe-bow and
stepped hull the other way as the on-water weight and
overall size are drastically reduced, but it didn’t; the Finnish
design team has achieved something special.
Closer to home, I convinced Whittley Marine to let
me loose on its soon-to-be-released SL 20, efectively a
shortened SL 22. No pun intended but that sells it short.
The on-water performance of the 20 versus the 22 was
surprising. Jumping from one the other, the 20’s balance
and response to trim were more easily exploited, and
frankly I preferred it. Profound as it is to say – since the 22
will go down in history as one of the best hulls to come out
of Australia – in the slop of Port Phillip Bay I enjoyed and
could get more out of the smaller boat. All will be revealed
online before this issue goes on sale – right in time for the
Melbourne Boat Show.
Safe boating,
Tim.
