Australian trailerboat fans have always
loved outboard power, and that’s
truer than ever nowadays, thanks to
fuel-efficient direct-injection two-
stroke and four-stroke offerings. The
benefits include the ease of trailering,
repowering and mooring, along with
the hidden advantage of saltwater-
friendly engines that don’t need heat
exchangers and limited hard-wearing
seals and moving parts. So the new
Chaparral SunCoast range has hit the
market, with models including the 210,
230 and 250 offered with options for
either Sport or Ski/Fish layouts.
My introduction was on a rather
chilly but gorgeous morning last year,
when the first SunCoast 250 Sport hit
Australian water. It was powered by
the majestic Honda 250hp Silver Bullet
four-stroke and they unleased me
in Port Phillip Bay to give it my best
shot. I’ve been biting my tongue ever
since but can finally tell you the 250
SunCoast stole my heart.
This is a beautiful boat with
tremendous appeal as a watersports
and fun cruiser. It has the right touch
of size, comfort and panache to host
its own party. The sublime aesthetics
express sporty prestige, from the
external eye-candy to the functional
internal facility and layout. She has a
ton of room in the bowrider, with the
hull shape to carry the weight safely at
speed. The helm combines the brazen
guts of a Chevrolet with the swank of a
modern Euro sports machine, all in the
comfort of plushly upholstered seating.
I loved the beamy cockpit that
screams fun, fun, fun! The horseshoe-
shaped rear lounge is really
comfortable, and the walkthrough
is ideal for access to the large rear
platforms that are a great stage for easy
boarding and playful watersports.
Plant the throttles on the big 250
Silver Bullet and you’re treated to a
rush of quiet and confident power –
and plenty of torque for those times
you’re carrying a full load of friends
and family. But what’s even better is
enjoying her action with just a friend
or two, to fully experience the powerful
yet soft and predictable ride.
The SunCoast range also features the
famous Extended V-Plane hull, which
has been tried, tested and proven over
many years to provide exceptional
handling plus a very pleasing level of
stability at rest.
I got to play in yet another 250
SunCoast at Secret Men’s Business, this
time fitted with a 300 Mercury Verado
that rocketed us to a speedy 44kt at
6200rpm with three on board. Whilst
I liked the package with the Verado, I
must admit I think it was a sweeter boat
all around with the Silver Bullet despite
having less top end – it still delivered
considerable grunt.
