fun, exciting and oh so heartbreaking
when the men get thrown off those
massive bulls before the buzzer rings!
A Parade For A Cause
Another night, the Deep Creek Lake
Lion’s Club Boat Parade takes place to
raise money for programs involving the
visually impaired. Those may include
students from the Maryland School for
the Blind enjoying several nights of
camping at Deep Creek Lake State Park
in the summer or special skiing venues
in the winter at the Wisp Ski Resort.
The revival of the boat parade has
members and visitors decorating their
boats with lights and anything else
they have on hand, highlighting special
themes. Costumes and food for the trip
are optional, but on a pontoon boat, it
just seems natural. A nominal entry
fee and registration is required before
departing Deep Creek Marina Lakeside
Club in McHenry and ending at Dutch’s
at Silver Tree several miles down
lake. About four stops are made where
people can donate cash for their favorite
decorated boat, with the winner getting
a custom-designed Winner’s Pennant,
and the visually impaired being even a
bigger winner.
Let’s Eat
There are several other popular
restaurants along Route 219, with
Brenda’s Pizzeria, The Boardwalk with
boat dockage, Honi Honi, next to Uno’s
for great libations, Lakeside Creamery
for homemade ice cream, and Dutch’s at
Silver Tree on the way to the State Park.
A few miles inland, the Mountain State
Brewing Co., with custom brews and
specialty flatbreads, including a gluten-
free pizza, all fired and baked in a wood
fire oven, are really delicious.
One place not to be missed is the
Deep Creek Lake State Park. It has a
mile of shoreline with a beach, the only
public boat ramp on the lake, a great
Discovery Center with Aviary, multiple
easy-to-moderate hiking trails, and about
112 campsites. The beach has picnic
sites with grills, and has interpretive
programs with evening campfires.
Activity schedules are posted in the very
informative 6,000-square-foot nature/
visitor’s center as well as throughout the
park. About nine non-releasable birds of
prey are enclosed for close observation,
from bald and golden eagles to falcons
and hawks.
A day on the lake at Deep Creek can
be as diverse as you like or as routine
as a lovely morning with a cup of hot
coffee or tea while admiring sparkling
diamonds on the water. One thing is
certain for those on the Fourth of July
holiday and that is to enjoy the bright
bursts, colors and explosions from your
pontoon boat on the water or at the shore
while realizing that the celebration
emphasizes our freedom in America!
