Saltwater Boat Angling — November 2017

(vip2019) #1

Saltwater Boat Angling 3

Welcome to issue 18. What a journey we’ve had since
our launch last year. With our subscriptions, and
readership, increasing rapidly, we certainly seem to be
doing something right. It’s a great team of writers we
have, some new and some veterans and because of that
we’re able to deliver, what we think, is a consistently
good product. We all hope you agree. The magazine
is now fully digital, with copies available for download
on Pocketmags, so you can read it on your tablet or
smartphone, too.
This issue is another cracker. August and September
saw a lot of interesting and high-pro le festivals and
competitions taking advantage of the abundance of
species in our waters at this time of year. From various
bream species, to sharks and John Dory, turbot, bass and
many more. We covered a couple in the last issue and
there are another four we are covering this month.
LIGHT TACKLE AND FESTIVALS
So, we start with the second instalment in our series
about light-tackle shing, this month it’s wrasse,
followed by a feature on turbot from Brighton by Sam
Wadman. We introduce a new charter-boat news section
with reports from skippers all around the coast. Do keep
sending them in and we’ll keep publishing them, it’s
important that anglers know where to nd the action.
On the festival front we report on the 6th Bexhill Sea
Angling Festival, the Manx Boat Festival, Lyme Bay
Bream and Salcombe Small Boat festivals, plus a plaice
competition held at one of my regular stamping
grounds, Hastings.

We’ve been to the Boat Show to review the new Raider
18 being built by Warrior boats, plus a look at some of
the new stu. Both Simon Everett and Kyle Waterhouse,
a recently appointed Garmin Ambassador, talk about
recent kayaking exploits catching bass and we have the
regular Tackle Talk and Practical Boating sections, the
latter is sponsored by Raymarine.
TUNA GUIDANCE
Last month, I referred to the increased sightings of tuna
in UK waters and wondered when the MMO would
issue advice on what anglers could and couldn’t do in
targeting these ne beasts. Well, the day after we went to
press, I found the answer. The MMO guidance states that
‘Sea anglers must not target blue n tuna, any caught as a
by-catch when targeting other species must be released
immediately and not landed or brought onto the boat’.
The link is here: https://marinedevelopments.blog.gov.
uk/2017/09/04/blue n-tuna-in-uk-waters/.
Glad that’s been cleared up then.
A TRIBUTE TO A
FINE FISHERMAN
September saw the
sad death of veteran
angler, John Barden,
from Bexhill. He’d
been a member of
Bexhill SAC for over
 fty years and was
well-known along
the Sussex coast,
amongst the angling
community. His depth
of shing knowledge
and skill, plus his
willingness (well mostly), to share this intelligence, really
helped me and my boat partner when we started shing
seriously from boats in the area. He had a sharp wit and
didn’t su er fools gladly. He will be missed by all.
Finally, keep sending in your Snowbee competition entries. The
latest winner is announced on page 6.
