Would we do it again? Most
definitely; it was the best holiday.
After all, if you’re going to be with
stroppy teenagers, which they were
occasionally, why not do it in style?
And there are always those precious
couple of hours between dawn and
the appearance of teenagers when you
can sit quietly and watch the harbour
come to life.
During those couple of hours the
sun gains confidence – from a shy
yellow as it rises, to a more powerful
force. In the hills beyond, bells tinkle
as the goat-herds call their flocks to
order, leading them out through the
olive trees. The line of bikinis hang
drying in the sun, to be made wet
again after a breakfast of Greek honey,
fresh fruit and real Greek yoghurt.
Then the anchor comes up along with
a good breeze to carry us to a new bayfor swimming, and a new harbour for
the night, with good food, warmth and
laughter. That is sailing in the Ionian.
Greece may be in financial crisis,
but the islands show little of this, and
their peaceful nature worked wonders

Michael, 59,
has worked as
a portrait photographer for the
last 20 years, recently combining
his camera skills with writing
and sailing. Married, with three
daughters, he is based near
Salisbury. He started sailing as a
small boy on the River Blackwater
in the bilges of a YW Dayboat,
followed years later by a few trips
on a Sadler 32. His Competent
Crew certificate was earned by
crewing on the Brixham sailing
trawler Provident, and the 1906
yawl Thalassa. He and his family
now enjoy charter holidays when
