With the boat show season well under way, Graham Snook looks at new yachts

available now and in production, with a vast array of semi-custom options

Let’s start with the basics. Jeanneau’s
new 440 has the option of two, three or
four double cabins down below with a
double forward and aft, a double forward
and twin aft cabins or twin double cabins
forward and aft. All layouts have twin
heads and a G-shaped galley to port
opposite C-shaped seating to starboard.
All layouts have a decent sized chart table.
It’s on deck, however, where things get
interesting – more specifically the side
decks. Outboard of the cockpit seating,
where usually the side deck is level with
the toerail, the 440 side deck starts at
cockpit sole level and rises up until, just
forward of the coachroof, it becomes a
conventional deck. The walkway makes
getting on to the deck an easy stroll,
rather than an awkward clamber. On the

hull there are full-length chines, twin
rudders and large, long rectangular
hull windows.

At a time when new boats are reducing
or removing chart tables, it’s something
of a surprise to find a yacht with not one,
but two nav stations on board; one safely
tucked down below, the other by the
companionway, on deck. There are those
who prefer paper charts to electronic
charts, but if you’re navigating in the
shoals, which her twin keels will allow, it’s
nice to have something in front of you.
Below the waterline, along with the
twin keels, is a skeg hung rudder which

supports the aft end when she drys out.
She’s tiller steered and the cockpit is
surrounded by deep coamings. Forward
is a high coachroof with large windows in
a deck saloon style, although the saloon
seating is positioned a little low to take
full advantage of them.
The windows do, however, make the
interior bright with views out from the
J-shaped galley to port, aft of which is a
double cabin. Opposite the galley is the
chart table with the head aft. The saloon
has U-shaped seating to port and a bench
seat to starboard. Forward, down a couple
of steps is a vee berth.
