This series is about what anglers
in general can learn from match
and competition anglers especially
those who have honed their art
enough to compete at national and
international level. To date we have
mainly concentrated on Kev Sampson
but Mark Smith, Cli Newbold and
Richard Russell have also provided
advice, techniques and tactics. This
month another current member of the
England home squad, Cli Williams, has
been good enough to give me some
insight into what he does that makes
his shing day di erent to the average
boat angler’s. It would have been more
appropriate to meet Cli on a shing
trip but the windy weather and busy
work schedules for both of us meant
that instead we had to meet at my
house and lled my dining room with
the gear that Cli brought with him.INVESTMENT IN TIME
That makes it sound like there may be a
big investment involved in stepping up
your current techniques but luckily, that
investment is mostly in time, not new
gear. As Cli told me, it is not all about
exotic and expensive tackle. In the rst
instance it’s much more about how
you organise your day and make your
shing style more e cient. This month
we’ll have a look at a few techniques to
get going. There are some items that
you probably don’t currently have, but

The dimensions of these rigs and how
and when they are deployed is what
can set you apart on the day and make
all the di erence but having six of the
correct rigs already tied and waiting to
be used is pretty academic if all six are
tangled together or you just don’t know
where to lay your hands on them.Match
