y quest for gilthead bream
began way back in April and
some of you may remember
that I wrote about targeting
them off the kayak in the June
issue. I’m a self-confessed novice with this
species though with help from some more
experienced bream anglers I was fortunate
enough to bag one right from the off on my
first session.
That gave me a real buzz and though it
wasn’t a very big fish and was most certainly
a case of beginner’s luck rather than a hard-
earned angling prize, it did nonetheless
spark a new obsession. Throughout the
summer I’ve spent a fair bit of time trying to

learn more about this elusive species and I’m
going to pass on some of that knowledge
because I know just how secretive bream
anglers can be and how daunting it can be
when starting out.

SPECTACULAR CATCHES IN
THE SOUTH WEST
I’m fortunate because I live within relatively
easy reach of several estuaries which hold
this fish. That’s half the battle, as I know a lot
of anglers who want to target these but can’t
because there aren’t any close to where they
usually fish. Near me, here in the south west,
there have been some spectacular catches of
bream this year and none more so then Rob
