In a move that has stunned the marine electronics
business, Garmin, manufacturer of GPS and Fish nders
amongst other things, have taken over mapping software
market leaders Navionics. As many readers will know
Saltwater Boat Angler has partnered Navionics in several
competition sponsorships as well as hosting webinars on a
variety of angling subjects. Cli Pemble, Garmin president
and CEO says of the acquisition “Navionics has long been
known as a leading supplier of highly accurate
navigational charts and mobile applications for boaters.
By combining Navionics’ content with Garmin’s BlueChart®
and LakeVüTM content, we will be able to o er the best
available breadth and depth of coverage to our marine
customers. We plan to retain the Navionics brand and will
continue to support Navionics’ existing customers.”

strong brand and reputation of Navionics into the future.”
In addition to a popular boating app, Navionics has
developed an extensive repository of nautical charts for
oceans, rivers, and lakes. Many of these charts have been
developed with Navionics’ proprietary surveys, done both
in the eld and with remote sensing such as satellite
imagery and airborne laser scanners.
Navionics is headquartered in Viareggio, Italy, and employs
more than 350 associates globally, who will be retained.
There is no detail about the nancial aspect of the deal.
As we understand it the existing partnerships with rival
marine technology manufacturers Raymarine and Navico

This year’s Junior competition, held
over three days, concluded with a
BBQ presentation on the nal day.
Fourteen enthusiastic juniors
between 4 and 13 took part in the
event with awards for the best sh
caught by any junior and separate
awards for the juniors catching the
most species of sh in the under 11
and 11-16 age groups.
An amazing 25 di erent species
were caught over the three days and
the largest sh landed and returned,
was an undulate ray of 14lb 8ozs
caught by 5 year old Blake Witheford.
Eight year old Olivia Francis won the
under 11 species competition with
145 points and 12 year old JacobGivan won the 11 and over species
competition with 97 points.
Every junior angler received a trophy,
a tackle box, a Shimano/Redgill cap,
a pack of lures, a pack of feathers,
a oat rig and a large bag of sweets.

course the event could not have
been a total success without the
generosity of it’s local sponsors who
donated the prizes. They included -
Poole Sea Angling Centre, MDL
Marinas, Christchurch Angling
Centre, Tom Smith and Greg Toms as
well as tackle manufacturers Sakuma

ANNUAL POOLE BAY SAC JUNIORS COMPETITION
One of the largest competitions held on the east coast
has just been held with twenty plus boats competing on
behalf of the police nationals, boats from the river Crouch
Southend, West Mersea, Bradwell & Brightlingsea
endured a very blustery two days’ event with winds up to30mph, any other venue would have probably had to
cancel but the relatively sheltered waters of the Thames
estuary helped the big competition to go ahead. Top
boat with rst and second place contenders went to
anglers on board Sophie Lea from Brightlingsea Essex
skippered by Lee Bolingbroke. All the skippers did very
well in this event enduring a very scru y day at sea to get
the job done.
Anglers came from all over the country shed the
competition with rays, whiting, dabs smoothounds, bass
and dogs were landed. Thanks to Ian Hinchcli who
