The Saltwater team were lucky

enough to receive this Cerratec

rod (partnered with a Poseidon

I speed 300 R reel) the day

before I was due out on a trip,

with a couple of fishing friends,

to try and find some cod off

the Sussex coast so I thought

we’d put this combo through

its paces.

What I noticed straight away

was it was noticeably light and

well balanced, with a double-

tip section. One a sensitive one

for bream and bass and then a

stiffer more through-actioned

tip for use with heavier leads.

Although we were likely

to be fishing with 8oz leads

and big baits on pennel rigs, I

opted for the more sensitive tip,

figuring that if that could cope

with decent-sized fish in a tide

then, with the extra sensitivity

it offered, we would be able to

pick up more tentative bites

from cod. On a previous trip the

cod did seem to be nibbling

our baits rather than whacking

them, especially in the shallow

inshore waters we were

planning to fish in.

I should say, I’m not a fan of

short rods, generally preferring

9 foot and longer. However, I

found this rod was extremely

comfortable to use and, when

we did connect with some

bigger fish, notably cod,

thornbacks and even a small

conger eel, it handled them

really well and I didn’t feel

underpowered at all, even with

the more sensitive tip.

That was at anchor but then

the sensitive tip came into its

own when we went on the drift

and started catching some

hard-fighting gurnards.

I liked the rod rings,

anchored on three feet and

definitely braid friendly. The

design of the butt is pleasing

(no sniggering please children!)

with its angled EVA grip and the

screw lock seat keeping the reel

well anchored.

All in all, at £45 this is

an excellent value rod

from Rovex and

one I’d certainly

recommend.
