Trade-A-Boat — November 2017

ENGINE ROOM
Engine room access on the 680S is either from the large
transom door, via the single crew bunk or from a deck hatch.
Walking in from the transom, I enter a fairly busy space where
twin 900hp Volvo IPS 1200s dominate.
These are the only engines offered, which may dismay the more
power hungry, but they proved adequate at sea (for me at
least) taking 30secs to reach top speed and 10secs to plane.
Ahead of the Volvos are alloy fuel tanks and 22kVa generator –
all nicely inboard to centralise weight.
Also here and along the centreline of the hull is the Seakeeper
stabiliser system.
It takes about 45 minutes from start up to being operational
and this particular one – Model 16 – can operate in all sea
states, but is best suited to calming that rolly anchorage.
Despite weighing a hefty 1000kg, it is a relatively compact
system.
