SIDEBAR
Ida, Sydney,October 2017.

During the course of preparing these two Ida articles I contacted
her Sydney owners, Jerry and Caroline Shirley. In the last few days
they have sent me photographs of Ida hauled out at Noakes Yard in
Sydney and say they have decided to sell her.
The obvious place to sell her is back home in New Zealand where
knowledge of her type of construction and materials still flourishes
with several of our outstanding boatbuilders, and where her place in
the material culture of the country is instantly recognised.
So, we Kiwis now have an opportunity to re-acquire a
prime Bailey classic yacht which, in our keen local classic yacht
environment, is very much a viable racing yacht. Imagine if Ida could
join her old foes of the past, especially Moana!
Boating NZ will be happy to be the conduit for interest in
repatriating Ida and to foster the formation of a syndicate if
necessary to achieve this. Of course, being totally realistic, although
the funds involved to buy Ida and ship her will be relatively small,
they will be far outweighed by the funds required to restore her. But,
this is the last opportunity to rescue her and have her gracing our
harbours for another 120 years.

RETURN OF THE NATIVE

Unlike many of
the other large
yachts she had no
seasons ashore
while their owners
took grand tours
abroad.
