year, is New
Zealand’s biggest yacht race and one of the
biggest of its type in the world.C
ool, calm and collected under enormous pressure, New
Zealand’s Peter Burling’s convincing form in Emirates
Team New Zealand’s America’s Cup win earlier this year
has earned him the coveted Rolex World Sailor of the Year
Award – for the second time.
He and 49er team mate Blair Tuke took the same title in 2015. It
is the sixth time a New Zealander has won the prestigious men’s or
women’s title since the awards began in 1994. The Awards have been
sponsored by Rolex since 2001. This year’s event was held at Patio
Los Arcos in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
Burling was unable to join delegates at the event as he is currently
competing in the Volvo Ocean Race on-board Team Brunel.
Marit Bouwmeester (NED), the 2017 Laser Radial world champion
was named women’s Sailor of the Year. She holds all the current
major titles – Olympic, Worlds and European.PETER BURLING IS
