Dave Larsen, the young CEO of Rayglass
Boats, has had his achievements recognised
by his inclusion in the University of
Auckland’s inaugural ‘40 Under 40’ list.
The list recognises graduates who are
making a significant contribution to their
field and community, according to the
University’s Director of Alumni Relations
and Development, Mark Bentley.
“Recognition of achievement often
comes later in life, but we wanted to
celebrate the game changers and high
achievers now and draw inspiration from
their accomplishments.”
Dave Larsen joined Rayglass almost 20
years ago and has been with them all his
working life, starting as a young apprentice,
then becoming Sales Director and, in 2013,
CEO at age 35.
While working at Rayglass, Dave
completed a Post Graduate Diploma in
Business Administration at the University of
Auckland. In 2009 he was named the NZ
Institute of Management’s Young Executive
of the Year.
Dave believes his career path and
achievements are proof that it’s still possible
to start on the bottom rung and work one’s
way up to the top of the ladder.
“I’m a great believer in upskilling and
gaining the education and knowledge to
succeed.
“Transitioning from Sales Director to
Chief Executive required a fundamentally
different skill set and the University of
Auckland was able to provide that.”
Rayglass manufactures the Legend
series of GRP powerboats, Protector patrol,
work and pleasure RIBs, and the innovative
Pro Jet, the world’s first commercially
manufactured PWC-powered RIB.

Galloway International Ltd has acquired
Smartwave Boats from Advantage Plastics Ltd in
Rangiora, Christchurch.
The purchase of Smartwave will complement
Galloway’s range of Mac Boats, manufactured by
the company for more than 20 years.
Galloway will continue to refine existing
Smartwave and Mac models, as well as
releasing new ones. The Smartwave acquisition
will allow Galloway to offer its national and
international customers two very different
styles of boats and should boost production to
more than 500 boats a year.
Galloway is developing a new 17-foot
(5.2m) polyethylene scout cutter for Scouting
New Zealand, to be known as Fern Cutter. It
is based on the original wooden cutter design
from the 1940s and the mould will be finished
for testing early in 2018.
Galloway has also been working with the

University of Auckland’s Engineering Department
on the design and development of a 7.2m
Mac boat, designed for offshore use and CE
certification to Class 2.
All Mac and Smartwave boats have CE
certification and meet Australian Marine
standards. They also have ISO 9001, ISO 14001
and Eco Smart Accreditation.
Galloway is currently manufacturing new
boat fleets for the Pirates of the Caribbean
attraction at Disneyworld in Florida and
the Small World attraction at Disney World
California. These Disney boats are designed
to run one million times around the flume,
12 hours per day, 365 days a year – a true
testament to the strength of the polyethylene
the company uses.
The current Pirates of the Caribbean Mac
Boat fleet has provided eight years of service.
