CLASSIC BOAT JANUARY 2018 47

DEN PHILLIPS 30 YEARS OF PHOTOGRAPHY

Billowing headsails aboard schooner
Eleonora at Panerai Vela Clásica Menorca.
Taking our breath away in light and shade, a
schooner steals by at Menorca’s Copa del
Rey in Mahón. It was such a treat to get so
close. You really get a sense of scale when
you look at the tiny figures on the bowsprit.
I have been very influenced by many of the
legendary Rosenfeld photographs.

West Solent One Design Black Adder at
Suffolk Yacht Harbour Regatta, 2014.
Black Adder well-reefed in gusty weather.
Dodging the waves, this time the camera
got drenched and was in need of some
care and attention afterwards.

Charlotte Ellen, Tollesbury Smack Race, 2011. On the up, the crew keeps a hand on the
mainsheet in gusty conditions. Built by Charles Kidby in 1906, Charlotte Ellen made a
welcome return to the fleet that year after an extensive renovation. These were difficult
conditions for photography and it was gusting Force 8, so we were surprised that anyone
was out racing, but they are a tough lot, the smack crews! Once again, my camera
was drenched and needed an extensive clean up.

Martha II at Heybridge Basin Regatta, 2014. The Old Ship public house stands ready to
welcome the crew of smack Martha II after the hardships of a windy Heybridge Basin
Regatta. Choppy inshore waters and a lot of wind (my favourite conditions), make for
the most exciting shots. Here you have the smack screaming along. Also I love to have
recognisable background (especially a pub) in my photographs – it definitely creates
more interest, especially for the locals.
