CLASSIC BOAT JANUARY 2018 51

Sunshine at last
With so many boats packed into the
harbour, it’s always difficult picking
out a scene to sketch. It helps to
focus on an interesting detail or
shape, in this case the lovely white
dinghy belonging to Marie-Fernand.

Monday 14th August

  • time to go
The scramble for the lock begins –
glad I’m not at the helm! Calmly, Art
manoeuvres Marie out of her corner
and we escape the confines of the
harbour when the lock is on
    freeflow. Hundreds of people line
the harbour walls to wave and cheer
as each boat goes past, and then
we’re all out into open water. Lovely
    boats surround us and Pegasus
loses no time getting under way.

I love bow shapes
The Dutch ex-survey ship Hydrograaf was
built in 1909 and has been immaculately restored. Originally
powered by twin steam engines, it’s now diesel powered. Alongside
her were rafted up Keewaydin, Provident, Amelie Rose and others.

Small boats
Small boats are always on the move around the
harbour, an opportunity to try to capture the posture
of people sculling. They move fast but always repeat
actions, so to draw them you have to wait for the
same posture to come round again – and draw fast!
A few lines is enough.

Homeward bound
It’s a smooth passage home on calm seas – 42 hours from Paimpol
to Ipswich including three hours anchored off St Peter Port to wait
for the tide. Thanks to the lovely ship Marie and to Art Butler and
Claire Cordeaux for letting an itinerant artist tag along!
