ISSUE 379|COMPUTERSHOPPER|SEPTEMBER (^2019129)
Iread that Microsoftisrolling out the
May2019 Windows10 updateinbatches,
and sure enoughit wasn’t yet available to
me via WindowsUpdate. IrealisedIcould
use Microsoft’s Media CreationTool to
make aUSB installationdrive,then use
this to updatemycomputers manually.
When Itried, Igot amessagethat my
hardwarewasn’t ready.Idon’t understand
why, asone of the PCs is very new.
Is there aworkaround?

1903 broken?
You’ve fallen victim to aproblemwith the
updatetoWindows10 version1903.
While Microsoftisusually happyfor
people to use aUSB drive, with this
updateithas discovered the potential
forthe drive to be reassigned,causinga
failure.Toprevent more seriousproblems
it has temporarilyblockedUSB updates.
Fortunately,there’s an easy solution:
simply make anew folder somewhereon
the target PC, copythe USB drive’s
contents to it, then run setup.exe.
I’m buildingaPCwith components
suggested in your ‘DesignYour DreamPC’
article (Shopper376). The MSI MPG Z390
GamingEdge AC motherboardhas two CPU
power sockets:CPU_PWR1has eight pins,
while CPU_PWR2has four.DoIneed to
connectboth sockets,or is it either/or?
Iask becausemy CorsairRM750iPSU only
has an eight-pin cable,and Iwonder if I
need to buy an extra four-pin one.

It’s ashame MSI doesn’t includeguidanceon
this in the manual, but CPU_PWR1is the
default socket which should always be
connected. CPU_PWR2is an auxiliarysocket,
which you would probablyonly need to

connectas well if you were going for
some ambitiousoverclocking.In most
circumstances,the system will work fine
with just the eight-pin cable connected.
The CorsairRM750i’smodularcable kit
includesone EPS/ATX 8/4-pinconvertible
12V connector,and two PCI-E eight-pin
cables, supported by three appropriate
socketson the CPU. Dependingon how many
graphicscards you fit and whetherthey
requirePCI-Expresspower,you mayend up
with one or two suitablesocketsspare on the
PSU, but to connectthe ATX4-pin socket
you’ll need to buy anotherlead. Make sure
you buy aCorsair type 4ATX 12V cable:
fortunately, you can buy the stock item direct
forjust £4 fromtinyurl.com/379helpfile1.
Thanksforyour reply to Ian Baker,who
wanted to stop File Explorerstartingin the
Quick Access view (Help file, Shopper376).
That’s improved things forme, but seeing
Quick Access in the My PC view is still
windingme up.Isthere any waytoremove
it altogether?
Terry Blight
There is, but it’s more involvedthan you
might expect. Before you start, make sure
you’ve switched File Explorer’s default
open behaviour to This PC as per our earlier
answer,otherwiseyou mayhavetrouble
openingthe application.With that done,
open the Start menu, typeregeditand
run Registry Editor from the results.
NavigatetoHKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\
CLSID and expandit, then within it find

and expandthis too.
Right-click ShellFolder and select
Permissions...,then click Advanced and look
forthe owner shown at the topofthe
Advanced SecuritySettingsdialog. If it isn’t
alreadyAdministrators, click Change,type
Administratorsin the object name box, and
click Check Names to recognisethe name
before clickingOK to take ownership.Now
select Administrators in the Permissionentries
list and click Disableinheritance.
When subsequentlyasked what to do,
choosethe topoption to convertinherited
permissionsintoexplicit permissions.
Double-clickAdministrators in the list, tick
Full Controland click OK three times to
accept the changesand close all three open
permissionsdialogs.
Now double-clickAttributes under
ShellFolder,change the value data a0100000
toa0600000,click OK, and close RegEdit.
Reboot Windows,re-openExplorerand
Quick Access will be gone.Ifyou ever want
it back, just retracethese steps, skipping
the permissionschangesin the second
paragraph,and changethe Attributes value
data back to a0100000.
