There are three competingtypes of

CSC mount,and the one you buy

determinesthe numberof compatiblelenses

and accessoriesyou have available.

Samsung’sNX-mountis arguablythe most

limited in terms of lens selection,and the

companyhas confirmedthat it’s shutting

down its Europeancamerabusiness,so it’s

best to avoid these altogetherif possible.

Sony’s E-Mounthas aslightly wider

range,but Micro Four Thirds offers the

Micro Four Thirds camerasare

typicallymore compactthan other

types of CSC becausethe image sensor is

physicallysmaller–with a22mm diagonal,

it’s roughly30% smallerthan an APS-C

sensor.The APS-C sensorsthat Sony and

Samsunguse in their CSCs are the same size

as those in traditionaldigital SLRs.

Like digital SLRs, CSCs come at a

wide range of prices. Available from

as little as £200, there’s aCSC to suit every

budget.Most come with at least one kit

lens, but if you alreadyhave lenses fora

particularCSC mount,you can buy the body

on its own and save money.

mount,you should payattention to a

camera’s features.Articulatingscreensand

integrated viewfinderswill help you compose

shots, while extra physicalcontrolsand a

hotshoemount will give you flexibilityfor

manualshooting.

Touchscreensare great, but they’re no

replacementforphysical dials when it comes

to changingshutter speed and aperture.An

integrated flash is much more convenient

than adetachableone,asyou can never

forget to take it with you.
