packaging redesign and now
comes in 29 shades. It’s the
perfect classic lipstick formula

  • richly pigmented and neither
    matt nor glossy but with
    a flattering sheen that feels
    comfortable and moisturising
    on the lips.
    Rimmel Lasting Finish Extreme
    Lipstick (£7.99; Boots and
    Superdrug) feels even more
    buttery, gliding over lips smoothly
    without dragging, and depositing a
bold, even layer of colour with just

one coat. Its melting texture
suggests it might wear down
quickly if worn daily, but it’s
a quarter of the price of some
lipsticks, so this isn’t too
heartbreaking.
If you favour something more
sheer and shiny – my personal
preferred finish – try L’Oréal Paris
Color Riche Plump And Shine
(£8.99; nationwide). The nine
shades – all with mouthwateringly
fruity names – are one step up
from a tinted balm and include a

touch of menthol to boost
circulation and give a gentle
volumising action without any
uncomfortable stinging. It looks a
little like wearing a lip gloss minus
the thick, gloopy texture.
At the other end of the
spectrum, matt lips often give
make-up a more modern look,
especially when contrasted with
dewy skin or sparkly eyes.
Maybelline Superstay Matte Ink
(£9.99; Boots) is one of the
most pleasant-to-wear liquid lip

products, with none of the
parched, flaky effect that some
give, which feels like it has sapped
every drop of moisture from your
skin. Once dry, it’ll stay put all day.
Bourjois Velvet The Pencil
(£9.99; nationwide) gives a softer
matt finish and feels light and
powdery on the lips. The chunky
crayon also doubles up as your
lip liner and is as easy as anything
to fill in your pout precisely.
I admit I’d never really paid
much attention to Sainsbury’s
own make-up line, Boutique
(sainsburys.co.uk), but its
relaunch last September made
me sit up and take notice. It
regularly launches the type of
trend-led products that you’d
typically expect from high-end
brands, are completely cruelty-free
and the quality is much higher
than the bargain prices would
suggest. This Lip Plumping
Hydrating Gloss – a good, basic,
non-sticky lip lacquer – only costs
£4, not much more than a couple
of avocados.
Similarly, The Body Shop’s
make-up can often get overlooked
while shoppers head straight for
its body butters and tea tree oil,
but there are some real gems to
be found – it released a couple of
brilliant eyeshadow palettes this
summer and its Shimmer Waves
bronzer has always given Bobbi
Brown’s a run for its money.
These new Shine Lip Liquids
(£7; thebodyshop.com) contain
nourishing jojoba, marula and
argan oils. Yes, they’re sparkly, but
it’s sheer, wearable sparkle, and
they make your lips look plump
and juicy.
Finally, if you can wait a week
or two, there’s an innovative lip
formula coming from Revlon. Kiss
Cloud Blotted Lip Color (£7.99;
Superdrug from September) is a
whipped mousse that leaves a
soft, semi-sheer, matt tint on the
lips, similar in effect to pressing
a tissue on to lipstick to diffuse
the pigment. It’s ideal for anyone
who wants some colour but
doesn’t particularly like the feel
of lip products.●S
