BEER

Our expert says cheers to beer with attitude

I

t wasn’t so long ago that beer
was just that – beer. And in
some bars, that might still be
the case, with punters happy
to stick to their regular drinks
and not look for too much
of a challenge to their taste
buds. But if you have an
inquisitive palate this is
an exciting time to be a beer
drinker. Never have we had
such variety to choose from.
So here is my selection of
seven beers with attitude –
and more flavour than you can
shake a stick at.

Jubel Urban Beer Cut
With Elderflower £1.80,
Sainsbury’s, 4% alcohol
This is a refreshing, bright and
gluten-free beer with prevailing
aromas of sweet elderflower.
It’s brimming with deliciously
exotic fruitiness with a bit
of sweetness.

Oakham Ales Double
Hopped Citra IPA £2, Marks
& Spencer, 5.9% alcohol
Aromatic with intense lemon
and grapefruit notes leading to
vivid flavours
of dried herbs
and citrus, this
beer has a
distinctive toffee
sweetness from
the malt. It is
quite rich and
mouthfilling but

this is balanced by a beautifully
zesty freshness.

Hatherwood Craft Beer Company
Hop Hunter Session IPA
99p, Lidl, 4.4% alcohol
Made with nine different hop
varieties, this is one brew that
packs quite a punch. It has
a spicy, bitter bite and although
not a heavy beer, it is full of
hoppy flavour with some earthy
notes. And with the addition of
some aromatic tropical fruit,
it’s solid stuff.

Thornbridge Pink Grapefruit
Halcyon Imperial IPA
£3, Tesco, 7.4% alcohol
Powerful grapefruit and mandarin
notes, fresh, bright citrus flavours,
tropical fruit richness and a
long, sweet finish make this an
expressive beer. It has good body
from the alcohol and is vital
and alluring, but fresh.

Bad Co West Coast Pale Ale
£1.25, Asda, 5.6% alcohol
This hoppy, earthy, slightly
tropical pale ale has an
agreeable spicy bite and a fresh
finish. It is a light brown colour
and is vibrant and refreshing.

Twisted Knots American IPA
99p, Lidl, 5.5% alcohol
A malty, toffee-flavoured beer with
some spicy depth and notes of
cream and herbs, this has plenty
of flavour with pleasant richness
and a sweet mid-palate. The
focus here is on the malt, rather
than the hops.

Plunged Orange Pale Ale
99p, Lidl, 6% alcohol
The orange character of this
beer is immediately obvious
and gives a fruity intensity with
some marmalade and savoury
hop notes on the finish. It is a
lively and distinctive tipple.
