USAF Needs 386 Operational

Squadrons by 2030

The USAF has announced that it aspires
to eld 386 operational squadrons by
2030, an increase of almost a quarter on
the current 312 operational squadrons.
The suggested expansion is the result
of an in-depth study to meet the demands
of the National Defense Strategy, which
has identi ed the re-emergence of long-
term, strategic competition with Russia
and China.

Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson
said the analysis behind the plan is based
on estimates of the expected threat by
2025-2030. By contrast, the USAF had
401 operational squadrons at the end of
the Cold War. The Heritage Foundation
expects that the USAF will need to acquire
an additional 60 bombers, 182 ghters, 210
tankers and 15 transport aircraft to equip
386 squadrons by 2025.
