AIRBUSis giving aviation enthusiasts the chance to furnish their homes with
striking furniture items recycled – or “upcycled” – from end-of-life aircraft parts.
The “A Piece in the Sky” initiative was showcased at Airbus’s Innovation Days,
held at the Leadership University Centre in Toulouse in May.
Airbus employees Anaïs Mazaleyrat and Jérémy Brousseau thought up the
innovative idea at an internal training programme at Airbus’s Leadership University
in Toulouse in 2017. It was then picked up by Airbus BizLab, the company’s global
network to support start-ups in 2018.
There’s currently a small pre-order collection available online, with delivery
scheduled for January 2020 – though regular readers will know that deliveries are
frequently delayed from aircraft manufacturers.
There is also a collection featuring products with limited supply.airbus.com

MEMBERS of the International Air
Transport Association (IATA) have
committed to improve bag handling
through the global deployment of Radio
Frequency Identi cation tags.

AIRBUS LAUNCHES UPCYCLED

FURNITURE COLLECTION

At IATA’s Annual General Meeting
in Seoul, the group of 290 airlines
resolved to transition to the use of
bag tags with Radio Frequency
Identi cation (RFID) inlays, and
introduce new processes to prevent
mishandling.
RFID labels contain passive chips
that transmit information in response
to antennae through radio-frequency
electromagnetic elds. Read rates are
99.98 per cent accurate and the chips
cannot be as easily concealed or
damaged as a traditional bar code.
Bags can also be identi ed and
tracked without human intervention,
making it easier to follow IATA’s
Resolution 753, which requires airlines
to track bags at four di erent points.
