(Elle) #1

The substantial wreckage of a single-seat
Ilyushin Il-2 Shturmovik was successfully
recovered from a lake in the Murmansk
region of Russia in early August. The work
was carried out by the Moscow-based Wings
of Victory Foundation.
Much of the forward fuselage, cockpit and
wings were brought to the surface and were
noted as being in remarkably good condition.
However, the tail and rear fuselage, being
largely made of wood, have rotted away over
the years and will need to be recreated.
It is thought that the Red Air Force ground
attack aircraft force-landed on August 22,
1943, while being lown by Capt Alexander
Ivanovich Kalicˇev, CO of the 3rd Squadron
of the Soviet Northern Fleet’s 46th ShAP

(Attack Air Regiment). The Il-2 was hit by
ground ire while striking German forces at
Luostari airield near Petsamo. Kalicˇev lew
his damaged machine back into friendly
territory before ditching in the water. He
escaped before the aircraft sank some 60ft
(18m) to the bottom of the lake.

After being cleaned, it was prepared
for a road journey to Boris Osetinsky’s
Aviarestoration company in Novosibirsk where
it will be restored to airworthy status. It will be
the third Shturmovik returned to light by the
irm, but will have the distinction of being the
irst single-seat, short-canopy variant to do so.

Airworthy Royal Aircraft Factory SE.5A
reproduction ‘C1096’ was delivered to Old
Warden, Bedfordshire in early August. The
privately-owned World War One replica was
built by John Tetley in Yorkshire around 30
years ago and represents the aircraft lown
by Canadian ace Capt Henry ‘Hank’ Burden

DSO DFC of 56 Sqn. Michael Souch
and his colleagues at Aero Antiques have
renovated the airframe and assembled it at
Old Warden where it will be test lown by the
Shuttleworth Collection’s ‘Dodge’ Bailey. It is
hoped the SE.5A will be lown alongside the
collection’s example in due course.

Avro RJX100 Prototype Under Refurbishment
Restoration work on Avro RJX
prototype G-IRJX is continuing at
Manchester Airport’s Runway Visitor
Park. This important airframe, which was
donated to the airport by BAE Systems
in 2003, is now being freshened up after
around 14 years of external display. The

team, which is being led by Mark Goodliffe
and Peter Hampson, started working on
the project in June 2017, and has recently
been able to deploy the front airstairs for
the irst time in many years. Other notable
tasks have included itting a new rear
loor covering, ixing the engine intakes,

numerous paint repairs and general
cleaning and maintenance. Future jobs
include overhauling the interior displays,
more painting and replacing worn panels
and components. (See the September
2018 issue for a detailed overview of the
Avro RJ/BAe 146 family.)
