(やまだぃちぅ) #1
Found in the rainforests of Malaysia,
Thailand and Myanmar, this unique animal
is related to the rhinoceros even though it
has a trunk! It also has a white patch across
its back which makes it look like a big rock
when it sleeps, helping to camouflage it
from other animals. Sadly, deforestation
means that there is not enough land for the
tapir to get food and live, making it harder
for them to sur vive.

ASIAN TAPIR
Tapir us indicus
IUCN status:
Endangered

IRRAWADDY DOLPHIN
Orcaella brevirostris
IUCN status:
Endangered

Unlike dolphins from the ocean, Irrawaddy
dolphins live in estuaries, which is where
rivers meet the sea. These animals are
considered blessed by the people of
Myanmar, Indonesia and Cambodia, so
they are not hunted. However, the dolphins
sometimes swim too close to the nets of
fishermen and they get trapped and drown.
Another threat is global warming, which
causes rivers to dr y up, making it dif ficult for
them to find fish to eat.
