You all loved taking a peek behind the
scenes at our ower-lled photoshoot
that we posted on Instagram back in
June. It was styled by Selina Lake and
photographed by Katya de Grunwald – turn
to p36 of this issue to see the blooms in
action alongside beautiful antique vases.

EXPERT ADVICE

ROSIE HODGE
Children’s and illustrated
book specialist at Henry
Sotheran Ltd

The Tale of Mr Tod was rst
published in 1912. The most important page to look at
when trying to determine whether a Beatrix Potter book
is a rst edition is the title page – generally speaking
the date of the rst edition should appear under the
publisher imprint. There are a couple of exceptions: the
two nursery rhyme books Appley Dapply and Cecily
Parsley. Incidentally Frederick Warne became a limited
company in 1919 and if you see a Frederick Warne and
Co Ltd mark this conrms a later printing date. From
the images provided the publisher code at the end of
the book designates a 1962 printing a late printing.
Surprisingly even rst editions in worn condition have
low commercial value; however rsts in ne condition
can command prices in the thousands of pounds.

Miss Potter

I recently bought
this book in a
charity shop and
thought it must
have some age.
However I
have not been
able to confirm a publishing
date as it does not appear anywhere in the book.
I have attached some photographs and wondered
if any of your experts would be able to ascertain
the date and value if any?
