A stylish nightstand is perfect for housing

your alarm clock book and reading lamp or

even for displaying a spray of fresh flowers and

a decadent scented candle. Its history however is

somewhat less alluring. Before the indoor flushing

lavatory became commonplace in late 19th-century

Britain it was customary to always keep a chamber pot

within arm’s reach in the bedroom. As such early

bedside tables were often fitted with an additional

cupboard or drawer to store a porcelain potty.

Occasionally these cabinets would be lined with a

layer of marble to stop any malodours from escaping.
